I was born in a place which no longer
exists: Middlesex. Where I lived is the London Borough of Hillingdon
now, but if you want to write to someone there you still have to put
Middlesex in the address. Weird.I had two brothers and two sisters, and
there were lots of fights between us. But if any of us got into
trouble, the others would always be there to help.
I’ve been a teacher, a
secretary, an adviser and a petrol pump attendant among other things,
as well as being a writer. Writing is the best job so far.
I started writing when I was about
eight years old, but I never thought then that I would be a writer. I
just wrote for fun, so only my friends saw what I had written – and my
mum, of course!
My favourite colour is blue, my
favourite food is chicken and my favourite place is Lucca, in Italy.I like to go to the theatre, read, swim
and visit new places. I love bridges and buildings too, particularly
historic ones.
I don’t like the colour pink, Brussels
sprouts or football.I am not a violent person, but I make
an exception for wasps. I hate them and will kill on sight.
I live in Cambridge with my husband and
we have two grown up daughters. If I am asked a question about myself
that I can’t or don’t want to answer, I simply make something up
(that’s what most writers do, so be warned. We are all very good
liars…)
